An evaluation of the theory and practice of ELT with a clear statement of a new direction. Takes on board current thinking and previous theory in offering a revaluation for the individual teacher and the profession. Principles include; language consists of grammaticalised lexis not lexicalised grammar, the grammar/ vocabulary dichotomy is invalid and successful language is a wider concept than accurate language. Implications for methods, materials and teacher training are fully developed. See Implementing the Lexical Approach (METHODOLOGY).
